SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Streets of Rage 4’ Gets Balancing Update, ‘RPG Maker MV’ and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 8th, 2020. There are quite a few new releases today for a Tuesday, and we’ve got summaries of all of them. I was originally going to put up a review today, but I’ll be bumping it back to tomorrow. Instead, we’ve got a bit of news and the usual lists of sales to check out. Let’s have a look and see what we’ve got!

News

‘Streets of Rage 4’ Gets Huge Balancing Update

I feel pretty comfortable saying that Streets of Rage 4 represents the best possible outcome for a new installment of the series. It’s one of my favorite games of 2020, and I don’t think I’m alone. The game has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times, a massive success by any measure. Today, a big balancing update hit for the game that makes more than 80 changes and adjustments. Axel and Cherry have been buffed, specials and star moves now interrupt any hitstun state on the ground, and SOR4 characters have a faster jump start. The final boss battle is a bit harder now, which I think is fine as it was rather anti-climactic in its original form. Anyway, there’s lots to check out. I hope we see some updates or DLC with added content in the future, or perhaps even another game.

New Releases

RPG Maker MV ($49.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

The popular game-making tool that has given decades of players a lazy criticism to lob at low-budget RPGs is now available on Switch. Unlike the PC version, there’s no way to monetize your creations here, so it’s all about the pure joy of creation, sharing, and checking out other people’s RPG ideas. You’ve got a lot of tools here for putting together a pretty solid JRPG, with lots of assets and features to make it your own. Of course, one of the best things about an RPG Maker launching on a console these days is that you can dig into the creations of others, which can be a lot of fun all on its own while giving you ideas for your games. I’ll have a review of this one soon, but if you’ve dipped your toe in these waters before you probably know what to expect.

AVICII Invector ($19.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

I know next to nothing about the DJ scene and very little of the Western music scene in general since I moved to Japan, but it only took a short bit of research to understand that Avicii was a huge star with loads of talent who left this world far too soon. This game was created in collaboration with him before his death and contains 25 of Avicii’s biggest hits. It’s a slick rhythm game that has received plenty of praise when it arrived on other platforms, and you won’t find me disagreeing with that general opinion with this Switch version. Two paid DLC track packs are available that offer five more tracks each, or you can buy the whole thing in a bundle for $29.99 and save a few bucks.

Party Hard 2 ($19.99)

A bigger and in many ways better sequel to the original strategic mass-killing game, Party Hard 2 has been out on computers for a couple of years now and seems to have been generally well-received. This Switch port should be more or less in line with the port of the original, making it a nice choice if you want to get your party-pooping on while you’re away from your TV or monitor. There are lots of new features in this sequel and you can probably tell by looking at a screenshot that the visuals have a new style to them. Plan the perfect show-stopper, do your best to get away with it, and finally get yourself a good night’s sleep.

Meganoid ($8.99)

Orange Pixel is going to be bringing over a bunch of its titles to the Switch, and here’s the first shot in that salvo. This is based on the 2017 remake/reboot/kinda-sequel, which challenges you with playing through tricky procedurally-generated stages, collecting useful items to enhance your abilities, and battling plenty of nasty enemies. This one was pretty cool on mobile, and I’d imagine button controls will make it even better. It’s a few bucks more than it is on mobile, but I think it’s still quite reasonable for what you get. Fans of roguelite platformers will want to give it a look.

OkunoKA Madness ($14.99)

Uh, so I can’t be 100% sure, but I think this is just an enhanced version of OkunoKA with a new Madness world to play through. For the most part, this seems to be the same game as the one that released a couple years ago on the Switch and is still available for $15.00. If you really, really loved OkunoKA and are willing to pay another fifteen bucks for a little more juice, here you go. Obviously if you don’t own either version and are thinking of buying one, this is the one you’ll want to pick up. Still not entirely loving this strategy, which is happening frequently enough now to call a minor trend on Switch.

Minecraft Dungeons Hero Edition ($29.99)

Available digitally and physically, Minecraft Dungeons Hero Edition includes both expansion packs, a Hero Cape, two player skins, and a chicken pet. Other than that, this is just the same Minecraft Dungeons that we saw release earlier this year. With the first expansion it has started to come into its own, but I have a feeling it’s only going to get better as more extra content comes out. This is a good value if you haven’t bought the game yet and are interested in doing so, but obviously doesn’t have too much to offer those who already own the base game.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Bandai Namco’s finishing out the summer with a sale on some of its Switch games, including the awesome Mr. Driller DrillLand and some of its recent licensed titles. Beyond that, there are a few other games that you may or may not be interested in picking up. The outbox is fairly big, but if I’m being perfectly frank most of the included games are on sale near-weekly. Check it out anyway, I suppose. You never know when you’ll find a new game to love, right? That’s the cool thing about our little hobby.

That’s all for today, friends. Tomorrow will have some news and likely some new discounts to look at. I don’t think there are any new releases scheduled, but surprises often crop up. We’ll summarize whatever comes, naturally. I should also have an RPG Maker MV review for you to read, barring any unforeseen circumstances. As for me, I’m going to be playing through Streets of Rage 4 again. Mmm, excuses to play games that aren’t brand new. That’s the good stuff. I hope you all have a terrific Tuesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
