Even though Magic Leap’s augmented reality products have yet to materialize into stuff you can buy, you will eventually see them in AT&T stores. That is because the U.S. carrier announced an exclusive partnership that sees it provide mobile data service for Magic Leap’s AR glasses.
Magic Leap finally revealed its developer-focused Magic Leap One “Creator Edition” in December 2017 and has since kept very quiet on how the thing works. AT&T’s announcement confirmed that the Creator Edition is still on track for release by the end of this year.
However, AT&T also confirmed it will be the “exclusive wireless distributor” of Magic Leap products. The wording insinuates that you will be able to buy Magic Leap products from other retailers, just not carriers.
In addition to AT&T’s network, Magic Leap gets access to the carrier’s content platform. The platform will apparently supplement Magic Leap’s existing partnerships.
Finally, AT&T will let customers demo the Creator Edition in select stores in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
The biggest problem with this partnership, however, is Magic Leap’s nebulous nature. We can simply take AT&T at face value when it says that the company will “transform computing,” but Magic Leap itself makes such bold claims with nothing to back them up.
Keep in mind that the company was founded in 2010 and raised over $2.3 billion in the years since. That is an impressive amount of money for a company that has yet to release a consumer version of its supposedly revolutionary mixed reality hardware.
Perhaps the Creator Edition will prove the naysayers wrong. Magic Leap also plans to show off the Creator Edition on Twitch at 2:00 p.m. ET and provide a closer look at the hardware.
