Canalys has released its Q2 2019 market-share results for Europe, and Samsung has emerged as the big winner. The Korean manufacturer has hit 40 percent market-share in the region, making for its highest figure in five years.
The tracking company says Samsung shipped 18.3 million smartphones in the region during Q2 2019, and that A-series phones accounted for 12 million devices. In fact, Canalys says the top four Samsung A-series models (Galaxy A10, A20e, A40, and A50) alone shipped more units than any other vendor did across their whole portfolio.
Samsung’s performance isn’t entirely due to its rejuvenated budget series though, as Canalys cited Huawei‘s poor performance due to the U.S. trade ban. The tracking firm explained that Samsung positioned itself as a stable alternative in the eyes of retailers and operators.
Huawei’s European market-share dropped from 22.4 percent in Q2 2018 to 18.8 percent in Q2 2019. The firm shipped 8.5 million units in this quarter, compared to 10.1 million smartphones a year ago.
Apple and Xiaomi’s contrasting fortunes
Apple was another notable loser in Europe during Q2 2019, recording 6.4 million phones shipped and 14.1 percent market-share. The Cupertino company shipped 7.7 million phones and was sitting at 17 percent market-share in Q2 2018, Canalys noted.
One major winner during the quarter was Xiaomi though, as it saw year-on-year growth of 48 percent. The Chinese brand shipped 4.3 million smartphones and hit 9.6 percent market-share in Q2 2019. The firm shipped 2.9 million phones and hit a 6.5 percent share in Q2 2018.
The tracking company noted that operators were increasingly keen to work with Xiaomi, thanks to its early 5G adoption and smaller brands fading away.
Canalys reports that the Galaxy A50 (3.2 million units), Galaxy A40 (2.2 million), and Redmi Note 7 (two million) were the top three devices shipped during the quarter. The number four and five spots were taken up by the Galaxy A20e (1.9 million) and iPhone XR (1.8 million) respectively.
