Samsung reportedly close to releasing new, faster charging battery technology

A recent tweet from Evan Blass (@evleaks) revealed that Samsung is nearly finished developing its new graphene battery technology. Samsung reportedly plans to launch this technology in at least one of its mobile handsets released by the end of 2021.

Battery technology development has been pretty stagnant over the years. Graphene batteries could change that, offering a few advancements over the current lithium-ion technology, including significantly faster charge times.

“Samsung is hoping to have at least one handset either next year or in 2021, I’m told, which will feature a graphene battery instead. Capable of a full charge in under a half-hour, they still need to raise capacities while lowering costs,” tweets @evleaks.

As @evleaks points out, devices with graphene batteries will be able to charge more quickly than current lithium-ion batteries. Some other possible advantages with graphene batteries include higher capacities, less weight, and lowered costs.

Using graphene in technology is not a new idea. Companies and organizations have been working for many years now to bring graphene products to the consumer electronics industry. Panasonic has already developed a small flexible graphene battery, Korean researches revealed their potential transparent graphene memory modules, and Samsung has also been developing graphene technology to create flexible displays. Yet, no one has been quite this close to having a finished graphene battery product that is ready to bring to market.

If Samsung can successfully develop these graphene batteries, it could dramatically change the mobile phone landscape, cementing Samsung’s place as a leader in battery tech development and blowing the competition out of the water. And no, not like that this time.
