This week in Apple: iPad with triple cameras and AR headset on the way?

MacRumors

The big Apple news this week centers on the rumored refresh of the iPad Pro, allegedly coming sometime this Fall. MacRumors got its hands on a physical mockup, which gives us a pretty clear idea of what to expect from the upcoming new entry in the family of gold standard tablets.

Elsewhere, we saw some news related to subsidies for the Apple Watch, an Israeli company that cracks iPhones, the rumored arrival of an Apple AR headset of some kind, and Apple getting into some hot water after deleting some features and apps for Hong Kong residents.

See the Apple news roundup below for all the latest.

The top Apple news stories of the past week:

  • iPad Pro 2019 refresh gets a physical mockup: As you can see in the image at the top of this post, the allegedly upcoming iPad Pro refresh has a physical mockup based on leaks and rumors. The iPad looks pretty much the same as usual, albeit with a square camera bump similar to what’s on the latest batch of iPhones.
  • Apple AR glasses could come next year: Rumors have been floating around for quite a while that Apple is developing an AR headset, but it now appears they could really be on the way. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s AR headset could land as early as the second quarter of 2020.
  • You might be able to subsidize your Apple Watch on Medicare: The Apple Watch has taken on a life of its own as one of the most popular health products of the past few years. Now, private Medicare plan provider Devoted Health could offer the watch as a subsidized benefit to members.
  • Apple in hot water due to its China relations: Twice this past week, Apple got into some hot water politically related to China. First, Apple removed the Taiwan flag Emoji from iOS for users in Hong Kong, and then it removed an app from the App Store that Hong Kong protestors use to track police officers. The latter incident caused a lot of internet commentary and Tim Cook eventually had to send out a memo to Apple employees explaining the company’s position.
  • Apple’s 5G iPhone modem could land in 2022: According to a new rumor, Apple could be planning to launch a 5G iPhone powered by its own in-house modem in 2022. This would be an incredibly ambitious goal if it’s true. We expect a 5G iPhone to launch in 2020 or 2021, but powered by a Qualcomm modem.
  • NYPD allegedly could unlock any iPhone since early 2018: According to an exposé article published by One Zero, New York City law enforcement has had the power to unlock virtually any iPhone over the past 18 months thanks to Israeli company Cellebrite. This is interesting because the public was led to believe that this was a brand new development.
